Hotel Del Coronado
Commissioned by Thomas & Debra Peterson
For their house in San Diego
December 29th, 2023
Client's Comment:
"We first met Xuan at Los Altos' Fine Art in the Park festival and were captivated by her art. Later, when Xuan created the Capitola II piece, we inquired shortly afterward and discovered it had been sold. Despite the initial disappointment, we thought of a way to transform this experience into something special. We approached Xuan with a request to craft a mosaic featuring the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. Having fond memories of our honeymoon there, we envisioned it as a special gift to ourselves. Initially, Xuan was occupied and hesitant to take on the commission. Undeterred, we persisted and reminded her twice more. After several months, she agreed to create the piece. The finished mosaic exceeded our expectations, and she even incorporated a small man and woman into the artwork to evoke memories of our first special time at The Del. Upon close inspection, the incredible attention to detail in Xuan's mosaics became evident.
We are delighted with the unique piece she crafted for us and appreciate the thoughtfulness she put into every aspect of the artwork!

Twilight Prayer

Commissioned by:

Client's Comments:
The inspiration for Twilight Prayer came from a simple card given to me by a relatively new friend at the time. I had moved out of my long term family home in connection with my divorce and the card included a wish that I find peace in my new home. My new home at the time was temporary and never really felt like home. I kept the card and it took on greater meaning when I moved into my current home in 2019. I thought about turning the card into a work of art, but was stuck in the planning stage until I saw Xuan's amazing piece entitled "Ready for Market". The "new" friend is now one of my dearest and "Twilight Prayer" will remind me of her love and friendship in wishing me peace in moving forward.
Materials: Stained glass, china and handmade ceramics, wood beads, spaghetti string glass, rocks, sand
Dimensions: 21" x 16"
Weight: 6 lbs

Client's comments:
At our pool, we had some blue glass tiles that needed to be replaced because they were cracked or broken. The glass is so beautiful that we couldn't bear to throw away the pieces that were removed. We saved them, with the idea that they might someday be useful as part of an art project.
Not long afterward, we encountered Xuan while she was exhibiting at the King's Mountain Art Fair. We were very impressed with all of her beautiful tile creations, which immediately suggested a use for our broken glass tiles. It took us some time to decide what object should be tiled and what the design should be. Xuan then accepted our commission enthusiastically.
We chose a crocodile design because we have many crocodile artifacts already. One of us has ancestors named Crocker, who adopted the crocodile mascot as a play on the family name. Xuan created a design using our blue glass tiles, along with some other pieces that she provided for contrast. She gave us regular progress reports on the design and the fabrication, including photos. We enjoyed the process and we are extremely pleased with the results.
Materials: Blue Glass, sea glass, precious stones, fused glass
Dimensions: 55"(L) x 19" (W) x 19"(H)
